Public Programs

Outreach

Since 1994, The Miwok Stables Center has supported a wide variety of no-fee programs for members of the community who would not otherwise have the opportunity, such as those with special needs, inner-city kids seeing horses and a ranch for the first time in their lives, and women in cancer recovery. We have served youths from Hunters Point, the San Francisco Juvenile Division, Sunny Hills Children’s Services, Oak Hill School, Marin County Sober Classroom, and patients from MarinHealth’s Cancer Recovery Center.

Horses as Healers

The therapeutic riding programs are conducted by the Miwok Equestrian Center, a riding school that took over in 2022 from the Miwok Livery, which operated since 1981. Miwok Equestrian Center has twenty-six school horses and an experienced staff of instructors.

Our outreach horses are the healers, while MSC volunteers act as mentors with a one-on-one teacher/student ratio and a deep level of personal commitment to each student.

We have partnered for decades with MarinHealth,  working with women recovering from cancer, finding new strength, hope and pleasure in the healing powers of the horse.

Oak Hill School

Students from Oak Hill School volunteer at the stables once a week to help with various tasks in a healthy outdoor environment and to spend time with the horses.

Miwok Stables is not a "therapeutic" riding center, as it does not have the facilities, training or equipment to accommodate disabled riders. We encourage interested parties to contact these fine therapeutic riding centers:

Recreation & Enrichment

The Miwok Stables Center provides a variety of non-riding experiences for visitors to this National Park, with interpretive talks, clinics and tours of the historic working ranch facility, where 42 horses live and work in harmony with the rural natural setting.

Park visitors include tourists from around the world, bay area residents, school groups, scouts, hikers, bikers and families out for a walk to the nearby beach. The Center's programs add to the quality of the Park experience for everyone.
